Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge – On Schedule
This month, steel box girders are in the air and being placed on the west side of the Trinity River as the floor of the cable stayed bridge takes form and the floor beams (the rib-like structures) are attached to the box girders. On any given day, there is a flurry of activity at the bridge construction site even with puddles of water standing in the floodway. So far, the construction schedule has not gotten bogged down by the weather conditions and the bridge is opening in 2011.
There is dramatic progress taking place on the east levee and all the way across Riverfront Blvd., as J. D. Abrams’ crews build the new approaches linking the bridge to that street as well as Woodall Rodgers Freeway. The week of April 19, the focus was on the concrete barriers along the roadway and the pouring of two giant columns closest to Riverfront Blvd.
Williams Brothers will be ready to begin erecting the center arch later this year. Take photos Dallas! History is being made as this steel beauty rises alongside Continental Avenue Bridge and it changes weekly.
Water, Kayaks and Learning all about the Sport!
This year, the Trinity Commons Foundation’s vision of a Trinity Weekend was a reality. On March 5, they held their annual Trinity Commons Foundation luncheon with an evening reception for the keynote speaker, United States Trade Representative Ron Kirk, and on Saturday, the outdoor activities kicked off with the 6th Annual Trinity River Levee Run.
In conjunction with the 10K race, a group of true urban water enthusiasts launched a new free event, the Trinity Kayak Obstacle Course. CH2M Hill spearheaded the event along with the Trinity Commons Foundation, Kayak Instruction, Inc., and the City of Dallas.
People of all ages got a chance to learn about different types of kayaks, paddles and paddle strokes; they tried on Personal Flotation Devices (PFD) learning PFD III is the recommended device by the U. S. Coast Guard for paddle sports because it allows for a wider range of movement and it is comfortable.

Then it was time to “plop” into the water in a colorful kayak! The water events included the simple fun of kayaking in Trammell Crow Lake. The more adventurous tried their hand at racing other kayakers on a specified course or turning 180s in the water; and for this event there weren’t any fake, double corks or half pipes required! It was simply a morning of paddle sport heaven in Dallas.
The construction for the Standing Wave is scheduled to begin in May 2010, pending floodway conditions permitting the work to commence. Next year, double the crowd of 100 is expected to join in focusing their attention on paddle sports so they can enjoy the new water feature in the Trinity River.
