Trinity Overlook Park Open! The City of Dallas Trinity River Corridor Project opened the new Trinity Overlook Park on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 with soaring white shade sails and a beautiful view toward downtown Dallas across the Trinity River floodplain. Approximately six weeks earlier, the Dallas City Council and project teams applauded the grand opening of the Trinity River Audubon Center in the Great Trinity Forest. The construction of the overlook was made possible by a $100,000 donation from MetLife Foundation via The Trust For Public Land. At the ribbon cutting, representatives from the City of Dallas and from both private organizations expressed their enthusiasm for the project and the opportunity it offers to help Dallas

citizens remain engaged with the Trinity River Corridor Project. “Working with MetLife Foundation and The Trust for Public Land to create this new place in Dallas is important to help further prepare Dallasites for the project. Dallas has dreamed of a way to change the river for 100 years and this land will become part of the largest urban park in America,” stated City of Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert. The Trinity Overlook Park provides the citizens of Dallas with a place to visit the levee and learn about the project. When construction begins on Margaret McDermott Bridge (I-30) and the Urban Lake, this view will be the best setting to watch the progress along that stretch of the floodplain corridor. |

Community View Young and old were all smiles at the Trinity River Audubon Center where the First Bloom event was recently held for Dallas youth. The event marked the program’s one year anniversary and First Lady Laura Bush and Kevin, Joe and Nick Jonas of the popular teen singing group, the Jonas Brothers Band, participated in the event joined by 150 students from the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Dallas and Williams Preparatory School. First Lady Laura Bush is the National Park Foundation Honorary Chair of the organization that was formed in 2007. The activities of First Bloom are aimed to help young people from urban communities connect to the outdoors and develop a commitment to conservation. The first anniversary was celebrated at the beautiful new Trinity River Audubon Center in the Great Trinity Forest. The restored wetlands, Texas Blackland Prairie and forest areas of the 120 acre site were an inspirational backdrop to promote conservation activities among everybody, but the event was focused on youth in particular. As Dallas embraces recycling, conservation and renewable resources, the event supported by the First Lady and the young pop icons is a perfect stepping stone for the growing “green” spirit in Dallas. |
