Southwest Airlines Creates Trinity Conservation Corps

Southwest Airlines teamed up with the City of Dallas and The Trinity Trust to show their love (luv) for the Trinity River corridor. With a $150,000 three-year grant, the work will focus along the trails and new gateways bringing volunteers from Southwest Airlines and other companies down to the river.

The funds will be used for trash and debris removal, native plant installations and the general maintenance of waterway overlooks and trail areas. Gary Kelly, Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive Officer for the airlines and

his executive team worked alongside 150 employees to plant 400 pots of love (luv) grass, clean up trash from Cedar Creek and remove invasive species from along the Santa Fe Trestle Trail on the day of the press conference.

Dallas City Manager Mary Suhm said, “This generous gift demonstrates Southwest Airlines’ commitment to the environment and to the City of Dallas. The creation of the new Trinity Conservation Corps continues Southwest’s outstanding legacy of service by benefiting the Trinity River corridor through beautification.”

NRG and Kites!

The 2013 Trinity River Wind Festival Presented by NRG brought out an amazing variety of show kites from Texas and Louisiana. The annual event is sponsored by NRG, the parent company of Reliant and Green Mountain Energy. They were on hand to give away fantastic free kites and to demonstrate their wide range of home energy services and products

Kroger returned to sponsor the Kids Fun Zone, Sprint returned as the electronic sponsor with games and gifts. Dallas Zoo Outreach wowed the children with neat critters, even a porcupine!

Over 4,000 people enjoyed the day’s activities. New attractions for this year were the Larry g(EE) Band fresh from New York and an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Club Wood, and the Sendai Kite Makers from one of Dallas’ sister cities, Sendai, Japan. In 2011, Sendai was devastated by an 8.9 magnitude earthquake and ferocious tsunami; the country is still recovering from the disaster.
