Dreaming Session for West Dallas
The Trinity Trust Foundation and the City of Dallas hosted “West Dallas, A Time to Dream” at St. Mary of Carmel Community Center on Vilbig Road at the end of August. Preeminent North American urban planner Larry Beasley led the session. The event was an all-day exploration focusing on urban planning in relationship to West Dallas and within the Trinity River corridor.
Mayor Tom Leppert greeted the 70 participants and encouraged them to work in teams to think about the changes coming to Dallas with the growth spurred by Victory Park, the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, the Woodall Rodgers Freeway Expansion, and the Woodall Rodgers Deck Park. He was joined by Councilmember and Chairman of the Trinity River Corridor Project Committee Dave Neumann, Councilmember and Vice Chairman of the Trinity River Corridor Project Committee Steve Salazar, and Councilmember Angela Hunt. City Manager Mary Suhm and Assistant City Manager Jill Jordan attended the dream session to share their vision of making West Dallas a more livable, accessible, attractive community.
The dream to make the neighborhoods surrounding the Trinity River Corridor Project a more vibrant and walkable part of our City is led by Dr. Gail Thomas, president and CEO of The Trinity Trust Foundation. She is joined in this hope by Trinity Trust Foundation board member Mary McDermott Cook who also attended “West Dallas, A Time to Dream”. The West Dallas program was the beginning of conversations to involve the community in such efforts. The roundtable groups included representatives from the Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity and Builders of Hope, and included Brent Brown of bcWorkshop, Marc Puig Principal of the Dallas Environmental Science Academy, Butch McGregor of West Dallas Investments, and Victor Toledo of the West Dallas Chamber of Commerce.
